Holiday Music Performances: Helping Your Child Shine on Stage

Holiday music performances are a special part of a child’s musical journey. Whether it’s a school concert, studio recital, or community event, these moments give children a chance to share what they’ve learned and experience the joy of performing for others.
Preparation is key in the weeks leading up to the performance. Consistent, short practice sessions help build confidence and familiarity with the music. At this stage, it’s less about learning new things and more about playing comfortably and steadily from start to finish.
It can also help to practice “performing” at home. Playing the piece in front of family members or even standing while playing can make the real event feel more natural. The goal is to reduce nerves by making the experience feel familiar.
Encouragement from parents is especially important during this time. Focusing on effort and progress rather than perfection helps children feel supported. Simple reassurance like “you’ve worked hard on this” can go a long way in building confidence.
On the day of the performance, keeping routines calm and simple helps reduce stress. A good night’s sleep, arriving early, and a relaxed attitude can all help children feel more at ease before going on stage.
It’s also important to set realistic expectations. Small mistakes are normal and often go unnoticed by the audience. What matters most is that the child participates and shares their music with confidence.
After the performance, celebrating the experience helps reinforce a positive connection with music. Whether the performance felt perfect or not, the act of performing itself is a meaningful achievement.
Holiday performances are more than just events—they are opportunities for children to grow, build confidence, and enjoy the rewards of their musical efforts.
